  • 5e3 circuit too boxy/brittle?

I'm not completely happy with the sound I'm getting from my 5e3 with a few tweaks...wondering if you may have some ideas. It sounds kind of stiff, sharp attack and boxy, too much lows and low mids (right around 184 hz) and not enough highs. To get a sound I'm more happy with, I need Tone on 10 and other channel on 11 to cut some lows.

    mods:
-.068 input coupling caps to shave a bit of bass (lower these even more?)
-using 6L6s (maybe they're slightly misbiased? up the resistor or switch to 6V6s?)
    -GZ34 rectifier for higher voltages/use of 6L6s...switch to 5y3?
-first two filter caps are 30uF to reduce ripple/tighten bass. lower these values?
-I'm using a Classictone 40W output transformer, imitating a favorite player's build that uses a Tremolux transformer. I initially used the 8 ohm output to drive ~8 ohm speakers but when that didn't work, I used the "16 ohm" one. Maybe there's something weird going on here?
-I'm playing through a 4x12 which expectedly boosts bass but it even sounds bass heavy through a smaller cab
-I've been thinking a switchable cathode bypass cap may fix the problem?

How about dumping the 5E3 and converting to a BF Princeton http://www.webphix.com/schematic%20h...a964_schem.pdf
as it seems that some mid-scoop and effective tone controls would be more up your street.
Leave the trem off or put the controls in the spare input socket holes.
