  • Rebuilding a Marshall 4x12B cabinet...

    Hey folks,

I just bought a Marshall 4x12B cab off craigslist for cheap. I need to retolex the cab but looks like I need to replace the handles, grill cloth and the switching jack on the back. I guess It could be a good cab with the thing rebuilt but it needs some love. lol.....

Where can I get the CHEAPEST parts for the rebuild? Anyone have any good parts sources they know of?

I paid $200.00 its a JCM900 cab with the 75 watters. I have had these cabs before and they are always good cabs

    Thanks

You don't need many Items, I imagine: tolex, grille cloth, handles, jack. So you have to consider shipping. You might find tolex and grille cloth at one place, but the handles $6 cheaper elsewhere. But when you order handles from that elsewhere, you then have to add the shipping, which is going to be $8-12. Paying more for handles at the tolex place, but hot adding extra shipping might be cheaper at the bottom line.

Parts Express is a good place to look for speaker stuff. See what they have that you need.

AES has grille cloth and stuff, so check them out too.

I don't shop there, but Angela sells some tolex and grille cloth.

Mojotone has handles and tolex etc.

I don't know how price compares, but check into spray on truck bed liner instead of tolex. Several years ago, I had my entire PA sprayed by Line-X and it still looks like new- much more durable than tolex. I suspect it's not that much more expensive if you consider tolex, glue, and if your time is worth anything. It has a textured tolex look to it, too.

Well I have found the tolex on Ebay pretty cheap. The thing that gets me is the Marshal handles, the corners are all broken off. The jack in the back has the corners broken off too. Looking at the handles I found some on the net for around $8.00 each made of metal, definitely better than the Marshall brand. The input jack plate sells for something like $30.00 to $40.00 depending on the place of sale. Jeez... plastic costing so much...

But the bright side, the cab looks beat but sounds good. The speakers are broken in so it sounds warm. I probably will do something like the purple tolex to make it look really vintage... as far as the hardware I'll probably keep looking till I find something cheap. I really don't want to have more than $300.00 into the cab since I find these on Craigslist around $300 to $500.00. This was where I found this one. Trying to buy a Marshall 4x12 cab new is just outrageous...

The one thing I notice about Marshall tolex is that it sure rips easier than the Fender tolex... I wonder why Marshall didn't use something more durable.

Anyone know how to remove the rivets on the Marshall amp corners without breaking the plastic? I figure I want to save the parts and just retolex and new grill. I'm trying to do this on a TIGHT budget...LOL....
