wouldn't you know it? Somebody had a Fender Deville and decided to wrap the fuse with tin foil.. I must say that they did an excellent job in wrapping it up...so nice and neat..If it had to have a bow on it, it would have passed for a Christmas present...and the damage it caused...burned a hole right through the output board where the screen resistors were....apparently one of the output tubes shorted and blew the fuse........funny thing...the owner has no idea whatsoever of why there was tin foil there...

Likely he bought it from somebody who had some trouble with the amp, applied the only sololution he knew - tin foil - and offloaded the problem amp to some unsuspecting buyer. Might even have passed thru a music store or hock shop. That's what some people do ...This isn't the future I signed up for.

Good point Leo. This is why it is good to get into the habit of always checking the fuse before you even try to turn the power on.
Sometimes that is all I need to do before declining a repair .Originally posted by EnzoI have a sign in my shop that says, "Never think up reasons not to check something."

The amp was bought new back a couple of years ago and repaired back then...Have no idea who did the repair. There was also wires running from the main board to the tube board as some of the wires in the grey ribbon cables were broken from the board. So I fixed all that up as well..I have a funny feeling that the foil was installed way back but can't say for sure.. There was a shorted output tube, badly burned screen resistors and the tube board was burned up as well...Once i fixed everything up I removed the fuse and hooked up a 100W lamp as a current limiter. That was when I saw the foil...but I always check the fuse before i do add power....and I usually do that first but didn't this time around..I will be from now on...also had a couple of bad pre-amp tubes as well...The amp is working great now.....as a matter of fact I also just finished a Blues deluxe that was worked on before and somebody forgot to solder all the tube pins on the sockets...plus other issues as well......
