There's also the condition of hot-tearing. Almost never seen before lead-free became common. Particularly affects older SMD boards.

SGM made some undeniably dangerous recommendations about an old 'widow-maker' type amp (no chassis ground, heaters run direct from mains unisolated). He got himself into a corner arguing about it and after the error of his ways was pointed out he departed, probably because he made such a d*ck of himself.

I wondered when this would come up. There's always someone that "saw it go down" and was paying attention to the right things to put it together. Of course SGM put his foot into his mouth plenty of times. But something about THAT time made him leave. I'm not even going to look that up. Watching the embarrassment and deconstruction of someone else is uncomfortable for me.

Maybe we should let this one lie, lest we should summon the devil.

He's not the devil. Just a sad man that found out he wasn't what he thought he was. He can try to find some humility and improve or he can go somewhere else where his illusion isn't laid bare. He'll probably do a little of the former but he'll mostly pursue the latter. He won't be back.

We had a different "guruman" pop in for a few posts, but he hasn't been back either. And he didn't have the wacky comic antics; he was just a jerk... But it was nice to have a thread about a "Crate-Peg" without the One-&-Only, original and best of gurus!

Now I just avoid anyone with the title "guru."

Ah, but SGM sure left a legacy, didn't he?

In my experience most stuff I worked on had double sided boards by the early 80s. By the time I got out of the industry (10 years ago) I regularly worked on 5 layer boards and replaced 250+ pin chips using ball solder technology and a binocular microscope, hot air extraction, etc. If I couldn't resolve a problem the board had to be sent to a main facility to be x-rayed. I shudder to think what is going on now. But audio tech always seems to lag the cutting edge a bit fortunately. PMPS was common by the late 80s. Regarding SGM... Anyone on this site for any time realizes there is a wealth of knowledge here that isn't taught anymore. It wasn't taugh when I was getting my degree in the late 70s. There are some very humble people here whose qualifications and achievements (I'm not one) are truly impressive. The fact that they are willing to donate their time to help novices is beyond generous and patience. I think that's why SGM was so abrasive. Beyond possibly hurting someone with his advice.

it was excruciating. Problem is, this isn't really a moderated forum, but it is quite authoritative as the internet goes. Posts stay up forever so if they are actually making dangerous recommendations they have to be challenged. I did go for the bloke I admit it, but enough is enough.
