Lightly tapping the preamp tubes with a pencil will help in identifying a 'microphonic' tube.

Rule that out first.

Resoldered around the tube socket and retensioned the connections. Straightened
out the tube pins (which were so bent they did a number on the socket), some Deoxit and
away we go. No more noise or microphonics and the amp is brutally loud now!
