  • Questions on a 1977 Peavey TNT 100

    Hi all,

I'm new to this forum. I just bought a 1977 Peavey 100 TNT bass combo. I really like the sound of it and i had a few questions i hope some of you can answer.

After cleaning the amp, I accidentally turned the amp on shortly without having the speaker connected to the amp: though the amp still functions I was wondering if this is harmful to the amp in any way.

Also, could someone tell me what the part is called that is circled in red on the photo?Click image for larger version

Lastly, I'm thinking about replacing the stock speaker. The combo is rated at 45 watt RMS: is it possible to use a speaker with a higher power rating (say 100~200 watts) without damaging the amp?

    Many thanks in advance!

It is only tube amps that are damaged by running without a speaker. This is a solid state amp - made of transistors - and in fact we HIGHLY recommend running it without a speaker during service and repair. Only when we know the amp is stable do we then connet a speaker. So no harm done.

You an always use a speaker rated for more power. The amp may put out 45 watts, and I suspect the existing speaker is rated more than that already.

The circled part is a drive transformer on the circuit board. It suppliies drive to the main power transistors.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.
