I had already put a new 330 ohm resistor and a new bypass cap on the cathode. The high currents were there in spite.
Every other part around there was good as well. I had bad measurements.
I replaced the 330 with a 470 and it brought the current down. The voltage drop on the 4k (which actually measured
3.97k) last I measured was 171.5 V. I figured that was 43mA and within reason.
