  • Need good amp tech moderately near Detroit

If you are (or know of!) a competent amp tech that will work on Thomas Vox amps, would you please post here or contact me by PM?

OK, everyone here that reads my posts knows I'm a nut about Thomas Vox amplifiers. My lunacy has led me to analyze, speculate on and reverse engineer the whole line over the years, and post stuff on how to repair them. I get a lot of email asking me to repair Thomas Vox amps, which I try to do when I can, but my life is simply not allowing me to do this at the moment.

I hate to see these amps junked for lack of cap jobs or other minor repair just because they're bi$@&es to work on, but I can't fix them all, and at the moment I can't fix any of them.

The frenzy of the moment is a Royal Guardsman that was disassembled by the owner's now-deceased (... I think... ) brother-in-law/cousin/toommate and has not worked since. It needs a cap job and testing, then reassembly. If you're capable and might be willing to look at it, please contact me.

On the larger scale of things, if you're a competent tech and are more generically willing to do repairs on Thomas Vox, also please contact me. I get emails like this regularly, and I'd like to be able to refer the owners to someone better than pot luck. I know
Thomas Vox amps backwards and forwards, and I'm glad to provide email and telephone support.
Amazing!! Who would ever have guessed that someone who villified the evil rich people would begin happily accepting their millions in speaking fees!

Oh, wait! That sounds familiar, somehow.

    Aw...

A few years ago, I would have hopped on the phone. But I am trying to phase this shop out. I can't think of anyone down that way offhand, I don't have a lot of contact with other techs.

These amps are in Detroit? I had you located in Texas in my head.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

I appreciate the thought, though. Thanks. From what I've seen of your expertise, I'd trust you with any repair.

I am in central Texas, but the amp is near Detroit. With the stuff I post at geofex on how to fix and maintain Thomas, Vox, I get requests for help from all over the US.

I really wish I could contact enough techs that would work on these things that I could do some kind of referral, even if it was regional.

Sorry to hear this, but I guess you deserve the time off.

Phase it out? Are you considering retiring? Keep me in mind if you have un-fixable or too-expensive-to-repair items that will eventually be tossed. I don't live that far from you.
