  • Carvin x100b... when it rains it pours!

    got another x100b on my bench this week. i fixed one recently for a friend, so when i talked to another guy who was complaining of similar symptoms with his newly acquired carvin i figured i knew exactly what to do.
    he says he was playing the amp and it suddenly just cut out. i opened it up and found R121 loose in the chassis. i've seen this before, so i installed a new 10w 350 ohm @ R121 and i swapped out the screen resistors for 1k5w.
    i tested the power tubes and while i didn't find any shorts i DID find one of the tubes failed the grid leakage test. this being a recent ebay purchase, i figured new power tubes were the safest way to proceed.
    before i installed new tubes and an adjustable bias i tried to listen to where the amp was at with some used known good tubes. not a sound came out the speaker.
    i plugged a 9v powered amp into the effects SEND... nothing.
    i used a signal probe to trace the input source through the gain stages and the sound makes it out of V1 but not out of V2.
    around this time R133 (22ohm at the rectifier) started smoking and that's when i turned the amp off.

    any thoughts as to what would cause R133 to heat up so quickly? would a bad op-amp draw too much current? i never put the pre tubes on my tester... perhaps there's an issue there?

    it's too late for me to poke around any more tonight, but i wanted to start this conversation asap to see where everyone's mind goes to to give me some ideas.

    looks like you have a short somewhere on the low voltage op amp supply. Are any of the ic's getting hot ? It could be one of the op amps or the A6 chip.
    Double check the adjustable bias, make sure nothing you did there is causing the problem.
    try disconnecting the reverb tank input wire, in case there is a fault there

    Measure the op amp power supplies, pin 8 of any op amp to 0V, pin 4 of any op amp to 0V, do you get +/- 15V
    Measure each side of R133 to 0V, and each side of R132 to 0V
    The caps around here are only 16V rated, and if you are getting more than 16V, these caps may need to be changed to 25V types

      once you mentioned the low voltage op amp supply is when i went back to the schematic and realized, "oh yeah.. i see two rectifiers and two different voltage lines.." and slapped my forehead.
      first i disconnected H3 (harness to the graphic EQ board) and still had a voltage short somewhere.
      next i removed all of the op amps, (all socketed, thankfully) and i found my voltage supplies were fine w/ the IC's removed.
      i simply replaced one IC at a time checking the voltage after each installation until i found the bad area. once i found bad voltages i removed the last IC and placed a known good IC into the same socket to make sure the issue followed the IC and not the socket.
      after a few minutes i confirmed a shorted IC and replaced w/ a JRC4558 because i have loads of them.
      all seems well now. thanks for the input!
