I know that passive pickups have to have a ground from the toggle to all the pot cases and from the tailpiece to the jack.

As do active pickups. There is no difference. As I explained earlier, the only difference is that the ground circuit is completed when you plug in a guitar cable by virtue of the fact that tip and ring are shorted together. This is done to stop battery drain when you are not using the guitar.
