Here's an old thread on rewinding a Gold Foil DeArmond.
    http://music-electronics-forum.com/t35686/
It looks like 44, is what was original.
43 can be used to rewind them if you don't have 44.

Thanks for all of the tips guys.
After scrutiny with a magnifier, I found two leads by the notch. Two is bad! So now there are three hairs dangling from the coil. Two of them have continuity, part of me wants to ground one end and use the other for output. But I don't think I should. I know of a few locals who can fix it.
I'm also thinking that I can rig up a pickup winder using an old reel to reel player and attaching the bobbin to one spool. It's got a counter! I've seen a few home made winders on youtube, but on no one has made one using tape players, or have they?

I've jacked around with vintage pickups trying to fix a broken lead.
If the wire is 44 PE, it is so small and so fragile it nearly impossible to fix.
Bite the bullet, and get someone that knows how to rewind it.
A 44 gauge pickup is probably not something you want to start on with a Reel to Reel setup.
Now days, I try to repair for a little while, then I take the exacto knife to it, and rewind it!
        Just my $.02.

What is the reading between the two "hairs" with continuity?
After reading that other thread, I'd say if it's anything over 3Kohm go ahead and try it.
You'll be bypassing part of the coil, but so what?
If you like the sound as is, it doesn't matter.
At this point, all you have to lose is some time.

          Spoilsport.
          Where's your sense of adventure?

I've heard legends of pickups made on turntables (which would take forever, even at 78 RPM), but never on a tape deck.
Let's see some pics when you get it working!

          EDIT:
After getting a night's sleep, I think I agree with "the previous caller".
If you know of locals who can fix it, just pay to get it fixed and move on.

I'm very happy to say that I got the pickup working and after a small amount of unwinding, I got rid of the third 'hair' (which was a broken part of the last few wraps of coil).
It was worth all of the eye strain and sweating over the delicate coil!
Thanks to everyone who helped on this thread.
I'll post some pictures when I get the pickguard finished and this baby is wired up and the circuit is complete.

Anybody have a link to guitar schematics or diagrams for two pups, to vol. pots. one tone pot and three way toggle?
