hello people,
sorry if this a stupid thread, or if it is in the wrong place...
i have just acquired a second hand hiwatt studio/stage head, after getting it home and playing it for a few hours, it has begun to crackle and splutter.
ive tried changing the leads, the iec power cable etc and its still happening...
the strange thing is that my bad cat black cat head had a bit of an episode a few weeks back (loss of volume and some crackling) and now the input valve for the first channel has gone microphonic....
so, do you think there might be a problem with my mains supply, or does it sound like i have just been unlucky with the valves??
if it is the valves and i replace them (any ideas on what are good at the moment??) will i have to have the hiwatt rebiased...? and am i correct in thinking that i can just replace the input valve of the bad cat with anything and not worry about rebiasing??
sorry if these are stupid question, but im not much of an amp tech, a can change fuses etc but valves and biasing are a bit out of my league.....
any help/advice would be gladly received.
many thanks
chas
