I have a question regarding the phase inverter tube. The manual calls for a 12at7, which is what it has now. Could a 12ax7 be used in this position? Or is it that tube for a reason.

The circuit was specifically designed to use the 12AT7. So, yes, it is there for a reason. However, a 12AX7 will function in that position without doing any damage. You can put a 12AX7 in the PI position and give it a listen if you would like to experiment. The X7 may not be optimum but you may like the way the amp performs with it.

Thanks. I may try an x7 at some point, just curious. It sounds awesome as is so I'll just leave well enough alone.
