  • Brunetti Star T Rack overdrive characteristic

I have one of these amps in to check over and the owner's main concern is the overdrive channel sounds "flat". I wonder if anyone can comment on the characteristics of this channel?

What I'm hearing is there's an exaggerated touch-sensitivity with the overdrive; light-to-moderate picking gives a cleanish sound and it takes effort to get the amp to drive hard, even with full gain (this is with the boost off). The decaying note very quickly cleans up and there's a definite threshold where the overdriven sound occurs. On open strings this causes a modulation effect on note decay, identical to that at 0:36 in this clip:

Overall the amp checks out ok and the clean and boosted overdrive channels are fine. Preamp tubes have all been renewed by the previous owner. I did a temporary full tube swap just to check - it's still the same.

I haven't come across one of these before and have no first-hand experience of how they sound. I did find a few posts on people wanting more gain from this channel.
