  • Peavey replacement basket compatibility

Does anyone know if a Peavey 1502-4 basket will fit on a BW magnet that a 1501 used to fit on? Seems that 1501's are no longer available. I called Peavey and the lady I talked to wasn't sure if they would fit or not. I may have to replace the whole speaker if I can't find a suitable replacement basket.

It will work with some caveats.

    1) The -4 means 4 ohms. If the original speaker was 8, you need -8.
    2) There are usually letters after the number like SB for shallow basket or DT for deep throw. Depending on the cabinet, you'll want to get the correct one.
    3) The new baskets fit the old magnets. They do not fit some cabinets and you may have to file/route/whatever to make the hole slightly larger so that the speaker fits.
    4) The mounting bolts MAY be too long for the newer baskets. Be careful that they do not go through the magnet clear to the spider. You may need to get new bolts. I've found this to be hit and miss.

Thanks for the info...This is a 4Ω speaker and a shallow basket Black Widow. There are no numbers on the basket except for 1501 Black Widow and 4Ω impedance. I offered a replacement speaker but the owner requested I try and find a replacement basket first...his amp, his money.

I can deal with the modifications to get it to fit the cab if I need to.

      Thanks again,

      Tim

They discontinue baskets now and then, for example old ones with metal dust domes were discontinued and all replacements were with paper dust domes. And ther are the profile things Dude mentioned.

The peavey parts people are good, but if you really have a compatibility question, call customer service there instead of parts. They should be able to tell you your best choice. Once you know what you need, then call parts.

If I recall, the 1501 was a steel amp combo speaker, while the 1502 was a bass speaker. The rest of the higher numbers were all PA types.

          Thanks Enzo,

It was the parts girl I chatted with. I will call and speak to their CS dept. This is out of a Peavey Rhythm Master 400. Four inputs so I suppose it could be used as just about anything. I was told that the band uses it as a bass amp or a keyboard amp.

My recollection is that drivers are not that much more $ than baskets, and you don't have to fool with it.

Generally the basket and the magnet assembly are very roughly half the cost of a whole speaker each.

A little info Peavey sent my way...it might be useful to someone else:

The oldest 150 watt BW magnet with a picture of a spider web on it ( totally flat shaped rear ) then the newer ( "DT"- deeper ) replacement baskets won't fit. Note: All BW magnets have a center breather hole. These oldest 150 watt magnets were offered until 1984.

From 1985 to 1990 they were rated at 250 watts. This magnet has a rear that has a dome shape or a conical shape ( not flat at all ).
Since 1991 the magnet is flat from outer edge until it gets to the center breather hole. There is a raised lip or radius around the hole. See attachment for a picture of the latest magnet, however this isn't the latest basket assembly.

At some point they added a cosmetic black rubber ring/boot around the magnet.

The 250 watt magnet will probably work with the 350 watt replacement baskets. The 500 watt ones ( BWX ) use a different magnet and I don't recommend trying to use one of those on an older magnet ). Even when they work on the 350 watt Super Structure BW magnet ( since 1991 ) they won't provide a 500 watt power capability. It remains 350 watts due to the older magnet. The BWX magnets have a " X " stamped on their faceplate.

Since there are 3 bolts on the magnet then you may rotate the RB to 3 different positions. It may fit better in one position then another.
