Sincere thank to Jazz P Bass, Dave H, Dude, g1 and of course JM Fahey.

I'm just checking in to say my lovely, much used top-of-the-range butane soldering iron has stopped working and is going back to the (excellent) manufacturer (Antex) in the hope they can revive it. I'm asking them to send me a cheaper model as a spare, but I'm out of action for a couple of days, even for DMM measurements as I have a couple of components out of place. Dag nabbit...

I still think they might find Glenn Miller's plane...so I am a bit out of touch.
Butane solder iron.?

Yes. When I was in field service I carried one. It heated up in seconds, required no electricity, nor did it need charging. I would use it for the occasional solder job. If I had to do a lot of solder work, I'd get out my electric iron and fire it up.

I love working without a cable, and having adjustable output in such a small unit. Running costs are higher, I must admit...

I also carried one in my portable tool set, great for soldering onstage inside a speaker cabinet, or on top of a ladder or with power off for any reason, including soldering inside a rolling Tour Bus .
And they are *powerful*.

If you ever have to work on something that can not be powered down, the gas unit is the ticket. Also, some of them are powerful enough to do chassis connections.

OK, interesting .....I can see where that would come in handy.
