  • Help! Peavey C30 lifeless...

Hi guys I'd really appreciate if any one could help out a newbie here.

I bought a used but mint Peavey Classic 30 about a week ago and have been having fun with it up until this evening.

I'd been experiencing hum when the reverb was turned up, so came on the forum here for advice. Id left the amp running, with no input, with the reverb up to examine the hum. I tried fiddling around with the reverb tank but realized it needed to be taken out before I could check the connections.

I went into the garage to grab a screwdriver, but when I came back I noticed there was no sound coming out of the amp anymore, and the valves were cooling and not glowing like before. However the pilot light was still working. This is the state its in at the moment - seemingly dead apart from the pilot light working.

I am a tube amp virgin and so don't really know where to turn Can anyone give me any suggestions as to what I could try? I really don't know the first thing to check...

ALL the tubes went dark? Or just the four power tubes? (the taller ones)

Inside the amp chassis are a couple fuses - they are on the end of the center circuit board. One will likely be ceramic instead of glass. Glass ones are OK to use too though. I think it is 10 amps. Pop that fuse out and measure it with a meter. I bet it is open.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

I mean all the tubes - it was (and is) exactly like the power had been cut, apart from the fact that the pilot light still worked. No amp noise or heat at all.

I'll have a look at those fuses tomorrow, I really wouldn't have a clue where to even start so thanks for your reply dude.

Here's hoping the cost of my new amp isn't going to be double I thought it was...

Hope this isn't to much of a negative response but every one of those amps I've ever seen hums when the reverb is turned up and it would take serious modding to correct it beyond the total cost of the amp itself.
