  • Recommendation for Class D Amp book

    Friends...

I am hoping someone can recommend a good book (or CD) to learn about Class D amps.

I know the MCM Electronics and other outlets sell kits and they require a dc power supply. That is a good starting point. But I want to have an understanding of what is going on. I found a couple videos on YouTube but a reference book would be good.

    Thanks,

    Tom

Not a book, but a good little primer.

      Thanks Monte....

I also need to read up on Switching Power Supplies. I think buying a kit would be a good idea!

I would start with switching supplies. If you understand those, understanding a class D amp will be easier. A class D amp is "sort of" a modulated switching supply. A kit might help, but some kits are just assembly instructions- put this here, solder this here, etc. If your goal is to understand what you are building, be sure the kit actually explains the circuits or you are just putting things together- a separate exercise.

Yes, Class D amps are basically a SMPS hooked up to a speaker.

The problem with understanding Class D is the fact that most IC's manufactured now have everything in one chip.

So there really isn't anything to be learned.

The output filters are interesting to say the least.

But there are entire books devoted to SMPS design. I think of you google switchmode power supply you will find some basic discussion of the circuit. I doubt you need all the math and stuff. I sure don't.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

I'm not sure whether such books exist but there are many application notes (available for free) from various manufacturers. I would start with the application note suggested by The Dude.

                Thanks Mates....

I found some intro videos and reference material from National Semiconductor.

Introduction To Power Supplies also covers the basics of Switching Supplies.

And yes, I get what you mean John.... it's all in a single chip (or two).

It might be fun to buy some components and build a simply supply. That will be my start. A friend has a Roland D Bass 210 that he wants me to look at. But before doing so, I want to understand what I am looking at!

I'm learning something from this one right now, studying for my mark bass repair --Notes on the Troubleshooting and Repair of Small Switchmode Power Supplies
