Mine is waist height (about 34" in my case). That way it's high enough to work standing (which I often do) or use a bar stool when I'm feeling tired.
I got a butcher-block table top from Ikea when way back when they first came to the US (its was reasonable) and built a sturdy 2x4 base for it. I can confidently put a PS300 or DR201 on it without a creak. It moved house with me back in 1997 and is still going strong.

My sit down bench is actually a table top that I built for my now defunct take out kitchen business. 5'x10', 3/4" plywood with supports and a 2" skirt that I covered in blue Formica. I sawed it in half lengthwise and mounted it in a corner with 2x4's into the wall studs as corbels. So now it's a large 2-1/2' deep corner bench with the dog leg on my right and a shallow eye level shelf just right of where I sit. Formica is great to work on. Even solder and hard flux just flick right off. I keep a length of that rubber shelf liner in hands reach for when I need a non skid surface.

All this and I still use stacks of books to prop up amp chassis instead of a special rack.
