Peavey PV10 Mixer Ribbon Cable To Effects Board

Friends....

I picked up a Peavey PV10 mixer board. Everything is working except for the Digital Effects.

I also have a PV14 mixer which is identical so I know how this thing works. (The PV20 is also identical in design.) In the effects area, there is a button for "EFX Defeat." When you depress the button, the Red LED comes on to indicate the effects are dissabled. In the up position, the effects are enabled. In my case, the Red LED stays on.

I opened the unit to have a look inside. There is a main board which connects to the Effects Board via a VERY THIN ribbon cable. Those white connectors are very tight... as if they do not want to separate from the PC board. Is that the design, that you must desolder the entire cable or do I need to give it a bit more "umph"?

I have written to Peavey for the Schematic. I will post that here. The block diagram shows how the switch works. It sure sounds like it is clicking on and off (mechanically speaking). Removing the main PC board from the case (to test or replace the switch) could take all day!

Ease the ribbon out at each end a little at a time. I don't just pull them, but use my finger as a pivot against the edge of the board to give more control. You need to make sure it doesn't get creased.

Usually the top part pops or snaps up to free the cable and keeps it locked in place when pushed down.

That's one of those AWM cables.

They suck eggs.

Be really careful when you reinsert the thing.
You do not want the little contacts to 'peel back'.

I usually swipe them with a Deoxit rag.

I forget where I found the data but those cables are good for "10 insertions".

We have similar ones in one of our units I service at work, my test ones are inserted alot more!

But he's correct, careful not to have one of the silver tabs bend up upon re-insertion

Thanks Mates.... I see what you mean. That is one dainty slash flimsy connector and can easily break. I was able to remove the cable. Sure enough, the EFX Defeat LED does not light up. If you look at the EFX Master page of the schematic, it looks like the EFX Defeat switch sends a ground connection to the DSP board and that in turn on the circuitry for the LED to turn on/off.

I called Peavey today- the DSP board and Ribbon cable go for $90- ouch. You will need to use the existing pins in both PC boards. Since this was an eBay buy for $100, not sure what I will do. If I can get a partial refund, I might do that. If I can pick up a donor mixer cheap, I could be tempted to do a DSP board transplant.

For anyone interested in the full schematic, please feel to write to me. The file is a tad under 4MB. It is a document that combines the PV10 and PV14 schematics. For the most part, it's the same pieces to the Puzzle- (1) Power Supply, (2) Regular Input Channel, (3) Channel for R/L inputs, (4) Effects Master, (5) Tape Headphone, (6) LED Array, (7) Master Section, etc. The zip file I am posting here is for the key pages of the PV10.
