What he said. I asked that question in post #11. We still don't have a certain answer. Post #12 says it's fixed bias, but I guess that still doesn't mean there isn't a cathode resistor. Is the 55mv measured across a 1 ohm resistor, with a bias probe (same thing), or is there some larger value resistor in there?

Sorry, the 55mV was measured across a 1 ohm resistor

Are you using SS rectification? If so, does the PT have a 5v winding? If there's room to squeeze in a tube rectifier you could drop a few tens of volts that way.

FWIW, I've had a few amps running EL84s at 460V and above. The Sovtek EL84M will hold up to that voltage all day long.

Yeah it's currently solid state. I thought about the tube rectifier, but real estate is at a premium with this chassis, and i don't think it would give me enough of a drop. I was considering the 7189As, but i don't like the idea of all the heat they would generate.

After weighing all of the options, i ended up installing a Blues Junior power transformer ($35.00). The B+ is down to 330vdc and everything runs smoothly. Had to take care of a ground loop that was making quite a bit of white noise even with the volume turned down. What a mess. Thanks for all the insight!
