Y'know, the triac could fail in various ways, but in every encounter I ever had with a PV crowbar, it is either a dead short or it is OK.

Agreed. I've fixed a lot of these and I only recall one time where the triac was only slightly leaky. I won't forget it, because it took me a while to figure out what the hell was going on with the amp.
