Hey Leo - I'm in southern Worcester county, about 50 miles west of Boston
Kool, I've got relatives & friends in the Boston suburbs (Sudbury for instance), also further west in Hubbardston and Whately.
On your amp, good move on the zeners, plenty of breathing room. By the time Ampeg was making these, they were a division of Magnavox. I hear they took up a corner of Maggie's huge television factory, a small fish in a big pond. OTOH some of Mag's engineers busied themselves designing solid state Ampeg versions. I worked on one a couple years ago that had a removable power amp module. The idea was, when you blow up your outputs, just go to the music store, buy a module, pop it in and you're back in business. Needless to say this never caught on.
Thanks for the history on the amp and the Magnavox years at Ampeg Leo. The B-40 has the same exact removable power amp module you mentioned. Although the original intent to have the removable module may never have caught on for the average amp owner - it sure made my life a heck of a lot easier when working on the amp! Here's a couple pics of the power amp module for posterity:
