  • Ampeg B 25

Just bought an Ampeg B25. It works great, but I've noticed that one of the transformers (left side, looking from the back) gets much hotter during playing than the other side. Bad news or normal operation. Thanks.

That's ok, it'll be the mains transformer I guess, specially if it's the bigger of the two. They do get warm.

Thanks. I was hoping that was the case, but haven't owned any tube equipment in a long time.

I think it's fine. The transformers are potted in black tarry stuff. I guess it conducts the heat out. I've seen a couple of failed PTs on fliptop Ampegs. Don't see enough of thjem over here in the UK to know whether it's a common weakness or not. Expensive to replace - so one guy asked if I could pot a Hammond in there instead & save money. There was room, so I said yeah... Had to get the old one out first though... Well I gave it an hour in a slow oven and it went a bit gloopy but it was still hell's own job getting the thing out of the pot & I didn't spend a lot of time filling all the voids when I potted then new one - but it was over-rated and didn't seem to run hot at all...

Thanks again. I think I'll leave well enough alone for now.
