  • Peavey 212 VTX Classic Power LED On No Status LED Dead Silent 6L6's Glow Feintly

I found this amp at a garage sale in town. 5 dollars! Can't loose right. It had no tubes in it. I bought matched pair of Sovtek 6L6's for it. Installed them, heald my breath and turned it on. Power LED Lit, dead silent, tubes glowed very faintly but there was no status light in standby or either power selection setting. If the tubes light at all I am assuming that the 3A main power fuse is okay? I do not have a voltmeter handy at the moment mine is on container ship bound from Oahu. So I am diagnosticaly limited at the moment. I will probably go to Home Depot and by a temporary replacement for my Fluke.

I do not have the foot switch. I have read that without the map defaults to high gain? I don't know if there are any other issues with FS lackage?

I am totally unfamiliar with these amps, I have the owners manual .pdf which is not that good about explaining where speaker should be plugged into the back of the amp. For my brief testing I used both the aux out and the main out....not the slightest buzz. If someone has the slightest bit of patience with a guitar player with some electrical skills as opposed to an EE, thank you in advance for your interest. I am not opposed to getting dirty.

    Welcome to the place.

Find the schematic for this amp and post it here so that everyone can discuss with the same part numbers, etc.

These amps often have more than just the external main fuse. Inside on the circuit board will be fuses for the low voltage supply, the tube filaments, etc. Pull the chassis and see if any of them are open.

You really need to have some sort of meter to do any real testing, do you have a Harbor Freight near you? They often have a free meter coupon in their ads.

      Good Idea RE Harbor Freight.

FiftyTwo, Just located the schematic and have attached it. I have only had a glance so far. I am going out to get a multimeter somewhere in a bit. While I had the amp on for a couple of mins (15-20) last night I did notice that the main power supply was just beginning to get a little warm, what I would expect really. I need to trace that status LED backwards on the schematic. Seems weird to me that the tubes were so dim?

Thanks for getting back so soon

The Power On led utilizes the +/- 15 Vdc supply.

The Status led uses Q1 as a switch to provide a ground reference to the led.
Q1 is turned on by the B+ voltage being present.

        B+ is protected by F1 (a 1/2 A fuse)

Thanks for the power section schematic. I did find that 250V 1/2 A slo blow Fuse to be blown. I assume this is not cause for silence from the rest of the rig? I tested all of the other fuses on the board and they were good. With Stand by happening halfway between High and Low Pwr, could that fuse oft times just be blown by unsteady switching or dirt? I am putting a couple of images in line for your review. You can tell by the Rust that this amp has come from Chicago. So the dude I bought it from said. I also found the guide key from a broken of tube flopping around beneath the power board. Now that I have a crude representation of a multimeter I can perform some more testing.
To confirm is there a chance that this 1/2 amp blown fuse should not cause the out put failure.

Any steps to further my research are apprecitated.=====> DB

Tube Socket Alignment Key nub. Somebody was not a happy camper after breaking this off.

I replaced the 1/2 fuse, and powered the amp back up again with internal speakers plugged. Once I flipped the power selector off standby I got a good buzz but nothing else. Since these are brand new tubes would burnin have and impact?

Update. I replaced the 1/2 amp fuse on the PS board plugged in a guitar and found that on the high power setting along with the buzz got just a little guitar sound to come out of the internal speakers. Then the 1/2 fuse blew.
So that's the extent of my update.
