  • Egnater Vengeance bad output

Egnater Vengeance (hi, Bruce!) on the bench with low and distorted output. Preamp signal is fine, PI is good, strong (400+ V p-p) signal at EL34 grids. But signal at EL34 plates is very ugly, and amp's output is only 4 watts max, and distorted.

Power tubes are properly biased, voltages at all plates (~460), screens (~455) and control grid (-41) are good. Also, I tried a fresh set of JJs, same results.

Any other tests to run before calling it a bad OT?

Well, all right. I used the neon bulb test on a good transformer and saw the flash. I repeated the test on the Egnater OT and did not get any flash. Thanks, Dude!

I'm not sure I've ever been thanked for helping someone find out they needed an expensive transformer before, but glad you got it figured out.

And were all the transformer wires disconnected from the circuit? Just to be sure.

Yes, ALL OT wires totally disconnected. They're all on spade connectors. I wanted to make sure I didn't flub the test.
