They have a lot of stuff but this one stuck out. Although why they sell in groups of 5 when they are usually used in pairs I have no clue...

Average out of the box usable yield is 80%? And my feeling is that they are not "real" but maybe as real as a current production 6L6GC is to a 1960's RCA 6L6GC.

Well... the price is certainly right! I remember them being made in Malaysia back in the day...

Many semiconductors are made in Malaysia and other Asian places. Having that printed on a part doesn't make it so.

I used to buy 2N3055 at my local electronics parts supplier, they were 74 cents each.

These guys buy bulk parts and sell them in convenient numbers...for them. They don't use them, so pairs is probably not on their radar.

One of the signs of counterfeit parts is bad printing, those are horrendous. Probably wash off with alcohol. I just bought some 10 turn pots, they are from China, yet marked Bourns, Mexico. They will counterfeit anything and print anything on that part.

The current standard widely available 2N3055 is the ST made one, and their *finishing* plant is in Malaysia.
Although the chip itself is made in Italy, France, Tunisia or even USA.

With so many plants worldwide, lately transistor case markings have become more complex:

notice Malaysia is indicated by just a 3 letter code.

I used tons of them, many years ago the full Malaysia word was shown but *these* look fake to me, both for the "narrow white line" font used for ST but mainly for the date.

And the 5 pack you mention shows the exact same graphics as above ...but without the ST logo ... WTF?

Looks like a bottom of the barrel fake to me.

As Enzo says, anybody can print anything on any case
