  • I Finally Blew a Speaker Now What?

I have these Fane 30 watt 8 ohms in my 63 Bandmaster cab after 30 yrs I got a Buzz..Can I use a VOM to see which one is bad.

  • #2
No, but you can use your ears. Play some music through the amp. Roll up a magazine and hold it to your ear. Now use the magazine like a stethoscope to listen to each speaker. Which one buzzes?

Also, you can disconnect one speaker at a time and play through one to see which is bad.

And make sure the speaker is the issue. A guitar pick sitting against the cone inside the frame can buzz, so can a loose mounting bolt.
Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.

So far it is the speakers at least one of them is bad I tested with my Marshall on 1 for a second and got the same buzz.. $85.00 to have it reconed and they told me I should do both at the same time..30 yrs of use I was laying down a Bass loop and only had the volume on 3 but I was using a MXR 6 band EQ to get some bottom end..I pushed toooo hard..Good speakers these old Fanes..

Did you practice Enzo's suggestions for locating the speaker and then inspect to see if there might be something between the cone edge and frame? Also, I don't know how you've isolated it to the speakers if they're mounted in a cabinet. There are a lot of things about a cabinet and mounted speakers that can buzz other than a blown speaker. It could just be a coincidence that you were running a heavy bass track through them before the problem was noticed. The greater vibration would have loosened or dislodged something rather than blown a speaker. I'm not saying that I think you haven't blown a speaker, I'm just encouraging you to investigate further before sending out both speakers for a recone that will change the tone.

I am glad I stopped and listened thanks Enzo and ChuckH...I took off the back of the Fender cab, I lightly pulled on the Positive wire and it came off..I resoldered it and checked all the others No more blown speaker.. It must of been bouncing on the bad solder joint I did 30 yrs ago..

On rare occasion a slight buzz in an old speaker can be cured by turning the speaker upside down, to reverse the sag from the ages.

Deafinitely. Ask your recone shop to do that & they will.

At any music store you might get that anyway. Your average salesman/manager can't be counted on to know what about recones. They are there to sell new stuff at a profit, after all.

There was at one time Orange County Speaker not too far from you. That is, if you're still in Dana Point. OCS went out of biz but I googled them and it looks like their chief speaker fixer is now at:

It seems to be a specialist art.
My friend who I do most of my repairs for his store has a guy that has been doing speaker work for ages.

A killer little Sano with a special 8"?
He had the re-coned kit for it.

A lost art, but luckily we have a local artist.

Or go straight to Weber speakers.
Contrary to most others who mainly deal with PA and Home speakers, Weber deals only with Guitar speakers, and preferrably Vintage ones.

To get a vintage style recone, he is the man to go to.

Yes, the mighty Weber company offers recones, not only their own speakers but also a limited selection of old favorites, including some of the "Muter" Jensens. Muter being Jensen's parent company before they folded decades ago. Check Weber's website, they demand you contact them first to get the OK before sending speakers in. Mostly to make sure your recone candidate is on their approved list. Speakers arriving without prior approval get shipped right back, unrepaired. Of course shipping to and back is paid by the speaker's owner. If you're out to save a couple bucks this may or may not price their service out of reach. Also consider the risk of shipping damage/loss against being able to drop/pick up your speaker in person as you may be able to do should you choose to use the outfit in Garden Grove. Worth checking Weber anyway so you can decide what to do.

I know DAB, you've had some dreadful experience with another fellow named Weber, you'll be glad he has nothing to do with Weber speakers thank hevvins.
