  • Rectifier with over rated filter cap, what will happen?

    Hey,

Just built a 5E3 and I'm using an EZ81 has the rectifier right now, but I also have some 6AX5GT 8-pin rectifiers, tung sol, GE and an RCA one, I'm using a 22uF 450 volt as my first filter cap but the data sheet for the 6AX5GT says 10uF max is it worth trying it or will it just burn out? what will happen has anybody else tried something similar?

Would also like to stop using my frankenstien 8-9 pin adapter!

the reason all this started is because my PT only has a 6.3v winding it is rated over 4amps so shouldn't be a problem was running 9 valves before.

    thanks!

I would go with the octal tube and the 22uf cap will be ok, but maybe use a 500 volt rating depending on where your B+ ends up.

at the moment I get 374v B+ at the first filter cap with an EZ81 so I'll give the 6ax5gt's a go and keep an eye on them. its always fun to experiment
