  • Dumb question on power supply

Can I use a general purpose 19ish VDC laptop AC/DC brick as a negative power supply? More importantly, can I use two bricks to get +/- 19V rails? I have a Marshall Lead 12 with a bad transfomer and want to try to power it up to see what else is wrong with it before I think about replacing the transformer. I can get the bricks for next to nothing at thrift stores. Bridge rectifier on the Marshall is already pulled out. It seems like it should work, but also seems like there is something I am missing.

    TIA,

I see no reason why not. As a repair it seems clumsy, but for testing it is pretty much the same as using a bench supply.

Use your meter to see if output devices are shorted.

You can, just respect polarity, and since they are floating and maybe you don't use the main cable, just give a ground reference to chassis to avoid noise.
