  • Fender Super Champ X2 help needed

Hi. I am working on a Super Champ X2 with no functionality... so it appears that the dsp board is dead. The analog porion of the amp up to and after the dsp appears to be fine. Have to guess if the dsp board has failed.

Is dsp board failure a known occurrance?

Since I am only repairing amplifiers on very part time basis. I no longer have my Fender certification so I would like to ask if any Fender authorized tech would order and sell me a dsp board assembley from Fender

    Thanks.

Be sure to check the DC voltages as per the test points in the service manual - the DSP needs 3.3v.

The part number is 0092163000 and, as far as I know, it's no longer available. Hopefully you can repair it. Check voltages as Mick suggested. I'd also try a factory reset. If none of that works, there is a work around for the XD. Maybe some of the same ideas would translate?

I spoke with Fender today. We tried to get the part earlier this year thru the now defunct music shop, and it never came in. So, yes, we heard it was not available. But I see that the SC X2 is available in the current sweetwater catalog, and today whoever i spoke with unoficially at Fender gave me the part number not saying it was not available. I did locate the service manual on this site, thanks, and will do some voltage checks. Thanks.

Just curious. Did they give you the same part number I posted, or is there a different part number for possibly a new or revised part?

Glad you axed. I looked at your number and at a glance thought it was the same. But no, they gave me 0091225000 and also 0091225006. He didnt know how the number ending with 6 differred...but I guess fender is having problems finding skilled help in the usa

...checking the service manual, the airhead on the phone gave me the pn for the main board. So the pn dude provided is the one for the dsp as shown in the service manual, so i should continue to try to hope the problem is not the board itself.

I recall the guy said the XD was gonzo but the X2 was still possibly available...but no cred

NB He told me I had to call back in late January if I wanted to try to reactivate my authorization though sounded unlikely they would since I am not working with a major shop. They should hire me to run their shop maybe...

            Thanks

So, this amp is currently being sold thru several outlets, Sweetwater, Amazon, and replacement parts are not available to technicians. Warranty is just via entire unit replacement. Good thing?

It says to me, to hell with the customer after the warranty is expired. IMO, it's a business practice that will cost them in the long run.

It's not just this model either. They have several newer model amps with parts NLA.

Of course I’ve never done this.. . But you could order a new amp from a company with a generous return policy like MF or Sweetwater, CLEANLY swap the boards, then return the new amp as defective for a refund. Of course I or no one I know has ever done this with these digital monstrosities, even in a shop setting to just make the damn thing go away , lol.

Back on the Super Champ X2. Decided to convert it to a simple amp with Solid state input and tube output. Works fine by removing the DSP board and jumpering Lout to Lin and Rout to Rin on P5. (Ling and Ring appear to be floating...but it works). Of course a tone stack and volume controls need to be inserted. But first, the preamp seems to need more gain.

However I cant follow the complexity of the op amp circuits. Looks like 5 stages before it goes into the 12AX7 inverter.

Can someone please help me sort it out and determine how and at what point to increase the gain of one or several TL072 stages? Many Thanks.
