Tape motor won't turn...

Got a Rexer RTE3000, similar to a Roland Space Echo supposedly.

motor is getting proper -15 volts, but is not turning.

I disconnected the wiring to it, reversed the polarity of the voltage and it turns just fine, in the other direction.

You ever see a motor work in one direction, but not the other?

I'm going to take it out, take it apart and see what I can do. And/or try and find a replacement.

To follow up on this use a current limitied DC power supply and test the motor independantly.

Yes, I realize changing polarity of a DC motor changes direction.
Current draw fine, it just won't rotate in the direction it's supposed to.
The other way, fine.

Is that with an independant power source suppling the motor?

If the DC motor has a speed control built in, a lot did and do, if that fails there is a back EMF diode strapped across the control components.
That is why it runs backwards and not forwards.

Yes
Using a power supply the motor will not spin with -15 v supplied to it as it gets from the unit.

Switch polarity of power supply and it turns the opposite direction.

The motor does have two other leads which go to a pot.

The regulator, as I suggested earlier, has failed. Replace the motor or repair the regulator that is internal to the motor, if the pot wires come from the motor casing.
What size is the shaft and does the spindle come off?
