New guy here.Nice to be here, greetings to all! I'd like to know which OT, some of you more experienced techs would recommend for a Fender "Brown Super"? I've checked out Antique,Allen,Hammond, mojo, etc.I saw prices starting at 40.00 and going up.The original Fender replacement,I have not found.I dont mind not getting an original replacement,I was just wondering if someone has had good or better results with a "better",newer OT? With all the "Merc" talk and all,I wonder if its worth it? Anyhow the other things is this particular amp is working very well in the sense that There is no AC hum whatsoever, sounds decent, but not loud enough, says the owner, and I agree. It starts to distort very early.A pair of 6L6's should be pretty loud. The history is when it first came to me,it was cutting in and out as per the owner.I found loose speaker terminals where the output leads were barely connected and were dancing on and off the speaker terminals.I would attribute this load on-load off to cause OT problems for sure. Also this amp came originally with 2-10/8ohm speakers in parallel for a 4 ohm load. There's a 8 ohm 15'' in there...ahhhh so... we can add impedance mismatch to this equation. A new 2- 4-8 ohm tap OT.would refresh this old amp.

I had some wonderful results while re-building my SF Vibrolux, using a Hammond O.T. (A Vibrolux is somehat similar to a brown Super, inspite of having a reverb network, and a neon/photocell style vibrato ckt.). The Mercury's are also nice, but a bit more pricey. The "generic" replacements offered by various companies (Mojo, New Sensor, C.E. Dist., Magic Parts, etc.), work "fine", whereas the Mercury's and the Hammonds will bring the amp to a "different level". A definate UP-grade. The most evident improvements being more/better Bass response (I ended up decreasing a few coupling cap. values, to keep it "tight" sounding), and the high-end "definition" and string seperation are incredible, with virtually no Treble harshness whatsoever, regardless of what degree of break-up you're going for. BTW, I also own a 2x10 Brown Super, and I plan on doing the same with it.Mac/Amps

Thanks for your valuable info Mac1amps ! I ended up going with ALLEN AMPS,he has a few nice OT's there on his site.I ordered the TO35MT with 4 and 8 ohm taps,as recommended. Its a USA made Heybor or something?Anyhow,I even got to Speak with MR.David Allen himself.Seems to be a good down to earth knowledgeable, helpful guy.I also ordered a Cap job kit more or less.I appreciate your input as to the better performance with a better Q Tranny.Hopefully this Brown super will respond nicely with the new "innards" its getting.I also recieved yesterday a full retube.I went for Sovtek 6L6WXT+ matched pair from the tubestore and a new China GZ34 (brown base) which looks very rugged. All 12AX7's JJ's.Reason is I have been quite satisfied, especially with the performance of the WXT+.The JJ's 12Ax7 have also never failed me and I like their tone and tough build.Question...I have a reading of -52v bias at the moment. Is this close enough for the 6L6's in this amp? Again, thanks for your input.Much appreciated.
