  • Peavey classic 30 reverb and general sound...

    Hi,
just got a used Classic 30 and it sounds sort different of other ones i tested:
    - It's very clear and not "tube warm" sounding
    - the reverb: as soon as it's turned up there's a buzz added and it really not present in the sound.

I changed the tubes but it's sort of the same.
I verified the reverb connections (took it out, back in there's a cardboard under it... seems standard...)

could anyone with more experience with those amps can tell me if it's usual and if there's anything i can do about it??

    thanks alot!!

I'm thinking it was modded with the Blue Guitar mods and may not have been done right or used some freaky values. This is a tree layer board and taking it out of the chassis is tricky without breaking the jumper wires which is very easy to do but that's how you can find out if it's modded.

You verified the reverb connections? Did you pull out the cables and make sure both the hot and shield conductors had continuity back to the board?

Does the hum remain if you operate the amp with the reverb pan disconnected?

With the pan connected but pulled out from the cabinet - away from the chassis some - does the hum diminish?

And verify the cables are plugged into the correct ends of the pan. Turn the amp on and the reverb up a little. Touch the tips of the cable plugs with your finger. The one that makes hum goes to the OUTPUT jack on the pan.

There is one IC on the board, it handles the reverb both drive and recovery.

        thanks and....

        thanks guys but...
I looked through the net and it seems common to this amp to hum and knowing a bit of it's history i don't think it had been modified.
i'd like to find a solution but frankly i'm not a tech guy so if you could explain to me a bit more what's an IC and if there's any chance of doing it alone it will be great.
        thanks again

Don't miss what Enzo suggested. I have also had amps in original condition where through some weird inexplicable change, the reverb coils start picking up hum from the power transformer.

I've had to reorient the pan by 45deg or so to reduce the hum induction to an acceptable range...or turn it around so the output side is farthest from the power transformer...not often, but it has happened.....glen

An IC is an Integrated Circuit. COmmonly referred to as a "chip." It is the one part someone could change and efectively have replaced the whole reverb circuit.

But all the other ideas I posted are not technical at all, and were designed to isolate the problem. Once we know WHERE the hum is coming from in the system, then we can determine WHAT to do about it.

As an authorized repair center for Peavey and many other brands, I can say I have not seen more humming reverbs in PV amps than in any other brands. When you look on the internet for people with some particular problem, what you don't see is the large number of people who DON'T have the problem.
