      so the headphone jack has a problem(i'm a novice but this jack cuts output at the speaker out when in use)?

        Yes, the headphone jack has a switch that shuts off the speakers so you can practice with the headphones and not wake up the whole house.

        The problem comes in when the switch doesn't close properly when the headphones are unplugged, making the amp silent.

          This is why I haaaaate headphone jacks and effects loops that work like that, with the built-in switch.

          Plenty of people, it seems, never use them, which means the contacts just sit there, oxidizing and/or getting something spilled in them.

          I guess it's a way to add advertisable features to the amp for cheap (price of the jack and maybe a resistor), but I wonder how many amps are sitting in closets or landfills because of dirty jacks.

              It is a common problem, yes, as problems go, but most amps never have the problem. it is a common thing to look for WHEN amps have this symptom, but it is not common overall. These jacks dirt up and oxidize about as fast as the other jacks. You just don;t care on the speaker jack, and the inout jack shunt can fail and you won;t notice since a guitar is usually plugged in.
