What is the third 12AX7 for then? Does it also work the pre-amp circuit?

This amp is pretty basic under the skin. there are two 12AX7s in the preamp, the third is the phase inverter tube, which is part of the power amp. That is the one next to the power tubes. The two preamp tubes - one is the input stages, the second is the tone stack recovery stage, though you could call it the preamp output or the master stage. Of that second tube, one half is unused: pins 6,7,8 are grounded.

So ther are three triodes in the preamp, two in the phase inverter, and one unused. Six triodes, three tubes.

You are indeed a God of amp knowledge. Thank you for the enlightenment...just goes to show me that when talking about amps it is important to be careful who I listen to!

          Thanks again,

I am just a guy who looks at the schematics.
