My Ampeg SVP-1500 is protecting in 4 ohm bridged.

Hey there, I'm calling from Denamark. I'm a happy owner of an Ampeg setup: SVP-PRO (serialnr.TPPWH90004) + SVT810E (serialnr. D9ZDR50050) and one Ampeg SVP1500 (Serialnr. ABYWI60015).

However since I've bougt my SVT-810E I have got a serious problem vith my SVP1500. In the owners manual ampeg say that I can bridge my Ampeg SVP1500 in mono mode in 4 ohm, and that would be perfect for my wonderful Ameg SVP810E in mono mode, but it is not working at all. When I try it, my SVP1500 got dropout and it is protecting after 1minute. It's so warm i can put an egg on it at eat it afterwards. The air fan cooling is working ok.

What can I do to get rid of this wery serious problem for me and my Ampeg rig.

Are you sure that's not an SVP 1600 ? You may have it hooked up incorrectly and is the switch set to Mono Bridged ? The speakon should be +1 positive and +2 negative to cab +1 positive and -1 negative. You should be using 12 gauge speaker cable. Sounds like something is shorted are you load is shorted.

Most amps (including big beefy PA types) get unhappy running bridged into 4 ohms, regardless of the claims of the manufacturers. It is roughly the equivalent of running each side into a 2 ohm load.

Also, though I'm not familiar with your particular amp, Ampeg usually uses a temperature-sensitive fan speed circuit and is notorious for underestimating the cooling needs of the amp. Perhaps replacing the little DC fan with a high-CFM AC type wired directly to the mains and running at full speed would help, but I still think the bottom line is 4-ohm bridge-mono operation is a hardship on the amp and will cause premature failure of the output devices.

Maybe you need an additional 810 cab for stereo operation!

I think my problem is that my Ampeg SVP1500 - yes it is a SVP1500 with correct cabels - can't use Bridge mode in 4 ohm - it is correct Mark Black. I think I will sell my SVP1500 and buy me a new Ampeg SVT-CL. That should be a good setup - SVT810E and SVT-CL! It's far to heavy with 2 SVT810E, then I need at new car too!!!
