  • Need a 5/10/20 Cap for Silvertone

Does anyone know where I can find a 5/10/20 multi-section cap for replacement in a Silvertone amp?

Ted Weber will build you one if he doesn't have the correct value already made.

But, you might be able to just solder seperate caps in underneath, I did that in my 1482.

      Want the can

      Thanks Regis!

I actually have been running into this problem on several Silvertones.

      I have a 1432, 1482, and a 1484....all of which have this 5/10/20 in it.

My 1432 is a super cool mojo amp, but is suffering from a little "power-cap give-out crackle" So, my thinking was to go ahead and do a cap job on all of them at the same time...provided I can get the can caps.

Thanks for the Weber tip. I'll check it out.

It is my understanding that any can cap that meets or exceeds the mf values and the voltage rating will do. I believe higher capacitance values might result in quieter DC being created.

Almost all the online tube stores sell these. Try a search on line for can capacitors. I use www.thetubestore.com but there are others.

Here is my 1482 page, there are pics showing how I did the cap job.

I did some work on 1484 and 1485 Silvertones a couple years back and used custom cans made from Vibroworld, as he is/was able to get the exact size can, whereas Weber's is larger and you have to cutout the chassis a bit. Vibroworld was not taking orders for quite awhile though so I don't know if Zack started it back up or if it is still dormant or not. The website is still up.

But really, consider just installing individial caps. Caps back when that amp was made were SOOO much larger than they are today. The multicap cans were made to get them out of the way. But that 5uf section for example, it ought to be the size of a 2 watt resistor. it could go anywhere. And for that matter, a 10 and 20uf ought not be particularly large. Leave the old can there for cosmetic value, but move the caps that replace it elsewhere. They do not have to be in the same area as the can. Most cans have wires running the length of the chassis getting to where they are needed electrically. Put the new smaller modern cap where the need is.

That's not true. I recapped a 1482 with a cap can from Weber and it was a direct fit, I had to make no modification to the chassis. Besides, Vibroworld has been down for a long time now, I don't expect they'll be back up.
