  • Marshall VS65R Problem

    Hey guys,
I'm having a problem with my Marshall Valvestate VS65R combo. It's from around 1996-97. It had some modifications made to it by the guy i purchased it from. For instance, it has a speaker line out added in so that i can run to my 2x12 cab instead of using the combo speaker. Also, there was some leather pieces places on certain components inside for insulation (I don't know that much about this, but the guy assured me that i makes the amp sound less "muddy").
Anyway, it recently started making this very loud humming sound and the guitar sound is broken up. This hum persists even if there is no guitar or cable plugged into the input jack. The humming does stop if there is no cable plugged into the speaker output though. Also, it does not matter if it is on the clean or overdrive channel.
So far, i have tried different speakers and speaker cables, and those do not make a difference. To get by at practice I started running the pre-amp line-out (not the speaker line out) into the PA board, and that works fine. It sounds great and there is no humming. This leads me to believe that it has to be something wrong with the power amp or the speaker jack, however i'm far from an expert on this.
Almost exactly three years ago the sound was cutting out with this amp, and i took it in to have it fixed. The music store ended up having to send it out to Marshall where they resoldered almost every solder because they were cracked. The fellow at the music store told me that that was not uncommon for Marshalls from that time period.
Anyway, i was wondering if anyone had some suggestions on how i could correct this problem. Thanks in advance,
    -Dan

Nevermind, i think i have it solved. I read an FAQ that said that loose capacitors on the power amp board could be responsible since the hum is independent of the volume and guitar. One of the capacitors is very wobbly, and by pushing down on it, the hum goes away and the guitar sounds great through it again. Thanks anyway, folks.
