  • Peavey Classic 30 switch to Celestion V30, G12H?, Hellatone? AGH!

Just got my second Classic 30 after having my first one for 1 week.. And yes the gf is mad at me cause i cry that i cant even afford to buy us lunch

I have a boogie thats been on the fritz for over a yr now but I'll post that on the repair section As for the Peavey ...

I LOVE the amp BUT I need more distortion. I play in a cover band and when we do stuff like Skynard the amp is great but when we go into the harder stuff like Halen or RATM i need a bigger crunch. I borrowed my friends Boss Metal Zone and that was a MESS! Noisy and uncontrollable. Some say to try the Tube Screamer which I might buy real soon. But I keep reading about speaker replacements on various forums. I know this wont give me distortion but should i look into that first. cause i have to admit the tone on the peavey could use some help. i looked into celestions and others speakers and i just dont know what is best for various styles of music. I have been so accustomed to my Mesa Boogie DC-5 for like 15yrs now and I would like a speaker that has a deeper tone, like the boogie, than the stock Blue marvel.

So .... should I go with the G12H, G12M, Hellatone, G12, Eminence. ... Im freakin confused... so many choices .

If some of you have been down a similar road i would love to hear from you

    Thanks

Get a tone bone British pedal and a Weber VST Blue dog (Alnico) and it will do wonders for the classic 30. Actually the tone bone may do it by itself but the blue dog is much better than the blue marvel.

A clean boost will get you more drive. A LOT more if you wish. That way you keep the amp tone. However, i think a really good pedal if you want more drive but also want more grit for the harder stuff, see if you can find a marshall blues breaker pedal. I've tried a lot of pedals to use to help an already distorted amp go further, and the marshall BB pedal has some of the best grind i've found. Kinda takes the sound of the amp and just adds more drive along with more grit....really good sounding grit. I was really suprised. i had heard they're really good and i now concur. Not sure they make them anymore, but you can surely find them online like ebay and such i'm sure.

If you want to mod the amp you can proably get a good amount more gain by replacing the 1.5k cathode resistor on V1A with a 820 ohm, then replace the .47uf cathode bypass cap on V2a with maybe a 4.7uf or maybe even a 10uf. Those amps have some very small blocking caps anyways and the bigger cathode cap should be meatier sounding without getting muddy. Only thing is, they are a biotch to work on. But getting more gain out of it should be pretty easy.
