  • Brown Deluxe plate voltage

New member here looking for help (and I have no electronics formal training). I have a '61 brown Deluxe restoration project that's dragged on for a long time but now it's done. It has been re-capped, a few new resistors and 3 prong cord installed. The rest of the innards seem OK. I did a replacement OT awhile back and the PT may be original but has no numbers on it (???). I just finished it up with a bias pot installation and some new JJ 6v6's. Fired up and biased at 25 ma. No red plates. The 5AR4 is an old but low time Mesa branded made in USA tube. Measured the plate voltage and it was 425 v. The layout/schem shows 365 v. My AC line volts at the receptacle is 118 v. Does the plate volts seem within reason? Any advice for additional tests, if necessary. I have a new JJ 5AR4 and a copper cap if a swap test is useful. After a couple hours of playing tonite there's no signs of stress, just a killer sounding little beast with great tones at vol 4-5. It would be perfect for the small room lower volume gigs we usually do. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

AC wall voltages have risen somewhat since that schematic was drawn, in fact I doubt that you may have even seen the schematic voltages when plugging into the wall in the early 60's...plus there will be some variance from transformer to transformer & from 6V6 to 6V6 (all are made to mass production tolerances).

It doesn't seem to be worryingly high. 25mA @ 425v at the plate will be fine. Always set the bias with the tremolo turned off, not just down.

      Thanks MWJB.
I figured the trem would need to be off when the bias was set. Whew. It seems like the bias modulated trem type could mess with bias setting even when turned fully down. It's interesting to watch 6v6's pulse when the trem is working and it sounds mighty good.
Is this causing additional stress on output tubes?
      This is a great site!

I had a brown Deluxe in for service a while back. One of the nicest sounding amps I've heard in a while.
