  • Matchless DC30: noise, pops and scratchy volume pot

Got a bad case of "roaring surf" from channel 2 (the EF86) channel of my Matchless DC30!

    Symptoms include:

    1) Volume pot is noisy when it is turned. "Surf" noise increases/decreases with volume.

    2) Six-way tone switch makes loud pops when switched. Quality of noise changes in line with tone position, i.e it's bassy in position 1 and gets progressively thinner from 2 thru 6.

No doubt some DC leaking somewhere, so could someone tell me how to test for DC at the pot? As there are no coupling caps between tube and volume pot - the 6 tone caps are the coupling caps I guess - where would the DC be leaking from/to?

    Thanks!

    Matchless DC 30

    Hey!

I am a brand new member of this Forum who also owns a DC30, which fairly well does what you have said yours did.

I noticed no one has responded. Dang!!!! LOL

What did you end up doing with your amp to get rid of the problems?

Thanks for answering. Hope you are still hanging in there somewhere.

Hi! Yes I did solve the problem. It turned out to be one of the channel 2 tone capacitors. If you need a schematic or more information contact me at ian@igmusic.co.nz.
