Im having a problem in my amp where the signal sounds ultimately compressed when cranked. Ive had this problem in other amps due to lack of filtering. Is this sympton typically only due to lack of filtering? Im also getting a lot of buzz and rattle from the speakers, however trying several different speakers yielded the same results. Could these problems be linked?

Underfiltering??

I'm going to guess that your problems MIGHT be independent of each other.
I assume you done a tube swap. If not, then do it, power tubes first, then each preamp tube. See if this helps.
The reason for the tube swap is that underfiltering would also lead to excessive hum modulation, which you didn't mention. Excessive compression and rattle almost sounds like weak, old power tubes.
Have you tried plugging the amp into another separate speaker cabinet?
If you suspect underfiltering, you just need to add some extra filtering by clip-leading or tack-soldering another cap across the main filter caps.
BTW- What amp is it?
