      Pure speculation, but I could imagine that opening the standby switch stimulates an ultrasonic oscillation burst. Marshalls often have little stability margin and the presence setting influences the gain-phase condition. Typically stability increases with presence fully up.

        Maybe try a 22pf cap across the feedback resistor anyway. Like I said, you can always remove it.
