G1 - just checked the patch cable, didn’t fix it, worth a shot though thx

Chuck H - tried it with guitar volume all the way up and it’s still clean, thanks for the suggestion

Jazz P Bass - I think I’m gonna do that or try all new tubes

I guess this post is closed, thanks again for everyone’s advice, peace and love from Kentucky

Do you mean that you're seeing a "thread closed" indication or that you don't foresee further progress?

FWIW I don't imagine tubes are the problem. Not impossible, but unlikely. If you're ultimately planning to take it in for repair anyhow you should probably wait and let the tech determine if it needs tubes. You'll probably save money.

Chuck - thanks for the advice about it being unlikely that it’s the tubes. That prolly saved me 40 bucks. As for the thread, I was meaning that no one need further comment because I had a plan as to what I am going to do. In that sense the forum post was a success. Thanks to you and all who posted. Peace

I get that you already have a plan, but FWIW, you wouldn't need to buy all new tubes. If it is a tube problem, it's likely just a single preamp tube- not all of them. You could just buy one 12AX7 and try subbing it in each position - one at a time- seeing if replacing any improved your symptoms. You don't need a full set.

And we still don't have definitive evidence indicated in the thread that the guitar can be ruled out. Has another guitar been used with the amp with the same result? Has the guitar used for testing been used with another amp that the OP is intimately familiar with and there is NO problem? Is the guitar in use now the same guitar that was used when the amp could be made to clip? ie: used to have a humbucker guitar but now has a single coil guitar.?. That kind of thing. Lot's of variables here.
