  • Ab763 trem speed knob removal

    Hey there!

this is a pretty simple one, but wanted to post here before doing anything.

I have a ab763 bandmaster that I have added a mid pot to, but I currently have it wired so it’s where the ground switch used to be. I’d like to move it to the front of the amp without drilling any holes. I do not use the tremolo, so can I simply disconnect the trem speed knob without adding any preamp gain? I know I can disconnect the trem intensity knob, but that would add preamp gain, and is not desirable in my application.

    thanks!

At the risk of losing the speed control why not just isolate the connections and secure it inside the chassis.

I never use the trem, so I am just trying to pick the easiest way to open up a pot on the front of the amp without altering the core tone/adding gain or drilling holes.

I basically was just wondering if there was any adverse effects from disconnecting the one lead to the speed pot and pulling it. Easily reversible if it works

If you disconnect the control then you essentially stopped the oscillator.

Will that change the amp if the trem is off anyways? I apologize I’m a little dead in the brain when it comes to this stuff

Consider what I do, placing a mid control. Can you give up #2 input on that channel? If yes, then the mid control goes there. Someday you might discover the charm of vibrato/tremolo and wish you hadn't swiped that position. Or you might eventually want to sell the amp, & buyers aren't going to pay top dollar for one that's been altered in such a way.

Also, consider putting in a 25K mid pot, then you can dial up a fair amount of mid boost compared to the standard mid-scoop tone common to Fenders.
This isn't the future I signed up for.

Another alternative. Many guys used to remove the #2 jack and mount a new control in that spot. We all mostly only ever use the #1 jack of an input pair.

But No, it will not harm the amp to run with the speed control simply removed. On some amp models, there is an ON/OFF switch right on that control, and by clicking it OFF, it opens the circuit to the pot...exactly what you propose.
