Hey guys just finished building a blackface champ came out great. I just have a couple of questions, the treble control makes a popping sound when turned past 3/4 of the way up and gets noisy at full level. Below 3/4 of the way up it sounds great and seems like its working fine. Could this be a bad pot or should I look somewhere else. My second question is can I replace the 5Y3 with a 5V4 and what difference if any will that make I know it will raise the B+ but was just wondering what your thoughts are. Any help would be great.

It sounds like it could be oscillating when you crank it way up. You might not be able to hear it but it can cause peculiar sounds. This can happen when the lead dressing is not shielded in certain spots. Or it may be a faulty pot. I've built amps and later found a small piece of solder or wire trimmings inside the pot causing problems. There's nothing wrong with raising the B+ as long as you don't exceed what the tube can operate at. A rectifier is a rectifier. I would solder a 1 ohm resistor between the 470 watt cathode resistor and pin 8 of the 6V6. Then you can monitor the idle current of your cathode bias output.
