  • Peavey Delta Blues 115 distorted clean channel

Bought it a while back. My first “grown up” amp (ie not something I bought because I saw it for cheap at a thrift store or pulled it out of a dumpster). It’s developed an annoying problem - distortion in the clean channel. The previous owner replaced the original tubes with the Delta Blues Low Output set from Eurotubes (4x EL844-4, ECC83S-S, ECC83S high current, and ECC832). It sounded ok when I first got it. But the clean channel is distorted and the gain channel cuts in and out. Both sound horrible. I cleaned the sockets with contact cleaner and it sounded great for about ten minutes but then was back to the same. Any ideas?

Did a little bit of messing with it. If I plug the guitar into the fx return, it still sounds distorted. If I run a cord from the fx out to my Peavey Vypyr, it sounds fine.

      Hi Andy...

Just want to be clear.... when you ran a cable from Fx out to the Vypyr amp, your guitar was plugged into the Channel Input jack? That is what your first check can be. If you have no distortion on the Vypyr amp, it tells us the problem is either at the Fx return jack or the phase inverter or the output.

      Just my guess...
It's not just an amp, it's an adventure!

Yes, to the input on the Delta. The sound was actually better than the Vypyr produces on its own.

Thank you for the suggestions. I’ll start trying to track it down

You can also put a short jumper cable (ie patch cable) between Fx Send and Fx Return. If the Return jack is dirty, that can cause a problem because it is in the signal path. Shoot some DeOxit spray cleaner in there and insert the plug a few times. Maybe you have a dirty connection point on the jack.
