  • Silvertone 1482 Replacement Transformer (Power)

    Hey Y'all, have a confirmed dead power transformer on a Sears 1482 (amplifier pulling massive current with all secondaries floating). Does anyone have reccomendations for a solid replacement?

    I know Mercury Magnetics has a drop in, but would either of these work?

    Can anyone confirm if either / both of these are acceptable?

    Either one of them is a bit high for the amp.

    Buy when shopping for transformers also look at the dimensions. As in would it even fit in the space available.

      The 6X4 runs off the 6.3V winding. You need at least 2.5A current there to accommodate all the tubes. So the Pacific is out. The other will be high as Enzo said (vibrollux it is used in runs around 450V B+). I don't trust the MM rating of 355-0-355V if the silvertone B+ is supposed to be 350VDC.

        There is another problem.
        The 6X4 requires a rather high winding series resistance, not typically found with Fender type/replacement PTs.
        The high series resistance and the voltage drop across the 6X4 will cause the DC to be around 3% lower than the AC winding voltage at idle.

        So the MM spec of 356-0-356 looks right.

            I would think so.
            But seems it stood the test of time. The saggy PT surely helps.

              I might have one for a 1472 which also uses 6X4 but I think it runs at even lower voltages.

                I think i have a 1482 here i rehoused as the particle board cabinet was dust. If you need any readings let me know. Is that the model which has a extra output transformer winding that is tapped off? Best thing i can say is maybe you will find a transformer from a old record player or radio with a push pull output section and the 6v rectifier. Other than that, you could convert it to 5y3 and would have a much more selection of transformers. Musical Matt does list one power transformer that has a 5v-6.3v filament winding.

                  This is all very helpful! I will try and find something with a lower B+ and failing that, talk to the customer about a 5Y3 conversion. Thank you all for your help
