    I really don't want to drag myself into a tangent, but...

    You might find some variac settings where voltages might stabilize and tell us things are not off center, but how can we be confident where that point is? If the voltages are skewed, is it because the amp is faulty or is it because we are only at 40% of mains? And we know that as we roll up the voltage on most SS amps, we pass through zones of instability.

    And I really don't want to reinforce the idea of the variac as a contest. "I got it up to 88 volts before the resistors started smoking". That kind of thing.

    Pretty much the only reading I pay attention to on the variac is the mains current draw.
    Education is what you're left with after you have forgotten what you have learned.
